Ideas That Can Make Life So Good

If I had my life to live over I'd do a much better job and from an early age.

Yet I'm very happy here and now. As we should all be, especially if we have sufficient accommodation, food and clothing.

If we do have all the basic necessities and are still weighted down with worries, tensions or emptiness, a few personal positive changes could be a big help in bringing increased happiness and a better life.

"This strange disease of modern life with its sick hurry, its divided aims." Sounds like the times in which we now live but it was written in the 1800's by Matthew Arnold. Stress is not uncommon but at this point in time it seems to be very much on the rise for so many. Our present social environment can make us feel anxious, empty or downright miserable if we do not have the right prescription for living well.

There are numerous happenings in our lives that can leave us feeling worried and depressed for long periods of time. But there is a wonderful prescribed set of ideas written on the topic of living wisely, much of which has been carried down through the ages. Some very helpful advice can be found repeatedly throughout these wise writings. We may only need to adopt our choices as our own treasures and keep them close at hand. A sampling is presented here.

A simple change of thought can provide an immediate improvement in how we are feeling at any moment. Initially this may not be easy to do and will require practice, but the results can be so valuable in eliminating those bad moments.

Cheerfulness will come from acting cheerful because it is very difficult to act one way and feel the opposite. Happiness is in our thoughts, it is not material things or experiences, but it is what we are thinking, now. So focus on pleasant ideas, words and experiences and feel better.

Smile and be smiled at! We are not likely to feel angry or upset when smiles are exchanged. Such a simple act with such a positive effect, and so said Joseph Addison (1672-1719); "What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. They are but trifles, to be sure, but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable."

Our values should be reviewed from to time. So many of us go through life always wanting more and better, much of which does not bring peace of mind and often just the opposite. It is normal to want more for ourselves and our families, but of what value will it truly be and how much will it cost in terms of real life? How many extra hours of stress and anxiety, now and later, are required? Anxieties abound in our social surroundings, even encouraged as we are continually bombarded with messages telling us that we must have more. But we do not need to go this way. We can eliminate those things which are not necessary for a contented life.

Carrying a heavy load of problems and worries for which there is no solution can take the enjoyment out of living, and worse, make us sick. Of course this is a complete waste of time. If our anxiety is about something we should fix, and can fix, and want to fix, then we should fix it. Otherwise we can forget it! Shantideva put this simply; "If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?"

In a stressful situation slow down and if you can, take a break. Visualize your way out of your tension by picturing a very calm and peaceful setting. Use deep easy breathing as a soother, and continue this regularly throughout the day.

Confidence seems difficult or impossible to achieve for many of us, but happily this can be improved upon. Personality might make it difficult but we can be content with doing what we can do. A good start is to forget trying to be perfect in the eyes of others and feel good ourselves. There is plenty of room on earth for us who are not superstars. There is only one you - you are unique and special in this world.

Feeling hopeless and sick might seem very appropriate and unique to your very difficult situation, but you should know that many of us have suffered similar or worse experiences and survived very well. So will you. To counteract the feeling of hopelessness, list those assets which you possess. Some of these: family, youth, friends, health, job, home, nature, pets, garden, music, faith, books...

Kindness benefits both ways. Many wise people have stated a very important relationship between our feelings toward others and how we feel. By thinking of and being thoughtful of other people, we get our thoughts away from ourselves and whatever is causing our misery. It's simple according to Benjamin Franklin; "When you are good to others, you are best to yourself."

Anger may seem justified when we have been hurt, however let's review the situation and consider the facts and effects. Who is being harmed by our anger or revenge? If we are sickened and causing ourselves more hurt, what is the sense? On this topic Arnold Bennett in the 1800's surmises; "It's hard to have one's watch stolen, but one reflects that the thief of the watch became a thief from causes of heredity and environment which are as interesting as they are scientifically comprehensible; and one buys another watch, if not with joy, at any rate with a philosophy that makes bitterness impossible."

Stress may attempt to intervene in your daily habits but do not permit it. Visit a peaceful retreat in your imagination, and at different times during the day, go there to calm your feelings. Picture it in vivid detail. Perhaps a comfortable room with soft music. A quiet place in the woods. A placid fishing lake. A beautiful garden with flowers, trees, birds, water falls. Perhaps such a place already exists for you. While you are there, let go of everything except where you are.

Guilt? Go easy on yourself and accept that we all make mistakes, or have done some very bad things that we so wish that we had not done. We can think about these but only long enough to review them initially; then make amends if possible, and if you want to. Finally determine better actions in future situations such as a avoiding experiences that result in guilt by not judging, blaming, or harming others - or yourself.

Love is such an asset but it can also involve problems with differences in opinion, manners and actions. One description of a long term loving relationship might be the desire for two people to spend their lives together, with a continuing compassion for each other through good and bad times. Joseph Addison put it quite nicely, "Two persons who have chosen each other out of all the species with a design to be each other's mutual comfort and entertainment have, in that action, bound themselves to be good-humored, affable, discreet, forgiving, patient, and joyful, with respect to each other's frailties and perfections, to the end of their lives."

In criticizing others we can make ourselves look bad and there can be repercussions. On the other hand listening and making an effort to see others' viewpoints results in less pressure to perform and tasks at hand will be made easier. The added friendliness returned to us will be uplifting. "He will succeed if he remains firm in principle and goes beyond selfish considerations to mingle freely with those who do not share his feelings, as well as those who do." - I Ching

Sleep tight suggestions. Quietly relaxing in the evening is most helpful to a peaceful night and a better tomorrow. An alcohol nightcap is relaxing but unfortunately usually sets a mental alarm clock for about 2am. Trying to put yourself to sleep has the opposite effect, so instead of clamping your eyes tight try leaving them lightly open to roam the room, or fix them on an insignificant object. Think peaceful scenes. Count sheep or count deep breaths. You can also consider that you do not need so much sleep and limit tossing to 15-20 minutes. Then get up and watch some boring TV or work on an easy crossword puzzle which will direct your mind away from what was agitating it. This can work very well and an hour or more of this and a return to bed can result in a sound shortened sleep.

Humility as well as self-confidence is necessary in a well-balanced life and this gives us a sound approach to interacting with other people. They feel good and we feel good, and another friend is added value in our lives. "Friendship improves happiness and abates misery by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief." - Marcus Cicero (BC)

So to improve our lives we can do what we would do to learn a trade, art or game; we can read and practice. A good place to start is the self-help or self-improvement section of the public library or bookstore. If you think that this is an odd place in which to be seen, think again. There are very many big selling self-help titles to choose from. These books are popular reading. Start with the most popular books on various self-help topics. Reread the better ones, highlight the best phrases, and take notes. Set aside fifteen minutes a day to help make good thinking and happy, satisfied feelings a way of life. It could be the best time investment you ever made.

Always consider professional medical help with difficult physical and mental health problems. We should not shy away from anything that could improve our lives.

Stress Tips for Stressful Times

Mental stress: worry, anger, fear and such have become a condition of life for so many in our quickened society, and has increased significantly in recent years.

Anguish may be tormenting us in these worrisome times even though we may have significant personal income and material possessions. In some instances it can be so serious that we cannot function properly from day to day, leaving us with the feeling of worthlessness or utter despair. In spite of what we may have obtained.

Medical help might be required, which should always be a consideration with all physical and mind related problems. Often there is also the prospect of some useful type of made to measure self-help. By learning what the experts and others have to offer on the subject of stress free living and by reviewing our habits and lifestyles we might set a new course through smooth and scenic waters.

If troubled you are not alone; stress is all around now and quite likely always has been in earlier times, to various degrees. William James' observation around the late 1800s; "The American over-tension and jerkiness and breathlessness and intensity and agony of expression are primarily social, and only secondarily physiological, phenomena. They are bad habits, nothing more or less, bred of custom or example, born of imitation of bad models and the cultivation of false personal ideals."

So this sorry business of anxiety and tension has been going on for quite a long time and is very 'popular' here and now! Well others have found ways to remove this, perhaps partially self-infected scourge, and begin to live happily and successfully. And so should you if need be.

Why not make some immediate observations about your thinking and your lifestyle and prepare a plan for the days ahead. While there is no magic wand to make feelings of despair immediately vanish into thin air there are ways of dealing with them that could gradually lessen and eventually make them a non issue.

We should be able to provide ourselves with some immediate and long term relief from the burdens we carry today. Some of the troubles you are facing now should be fixable, partly or altogether. Those that cannot be resolved can be filed in a vault and buried deeply, unreachable and never to be seen again.

Perceptions that William James has made are fairly certain; change your thoughts from gloom to cheerfulness and the feelings must follow. How should it be any other way?

For instance, for relief from those troubled thoughts you can often visualize your way out by picturing yourself in a very calm, peaceful, serene setting, in complete easy control. It can be real or creative but picture it clearly and hold on to it. Use your imagination in other ways to help siphon off tensions. For example, when in the shower let all your worries, stresses, anxieties, run down the drain with the soapy water. But start to replace those troubled mental images immediately as they occur - with something pleasant - and keep it going.

When you start to feel stress coming on, immediately start relaxing your whole body; neck, arms, legs... Go limp; it is very difficult to act tense if your muscles are loose.

Fill your mind with thoughts of tranquility, confidence, strength, happiness. Repeat these and other calming words to yourself now and again, over and over until they saturate your thoughts.

Generally, to improve upon a stressful way of life you can reassess your values and routines. Consider eliminating some of those material things and related actions which are not necessary to a peaceful lifestyle. Slow down.

Take notice of, and enjoy your surroundings through the day. Look at, listen to, smell the natural surroundings; the birds, trees, clouds... Spend more time thinking about the good and pleasant things in your life, like family and friends, pets, garden, jokes, photos... Create a list.

Make a determined effort to please someone. Offer help, listen, agree, smile. This is much easier than trying to impress others and the good vibes will flow and ebb. Thinking of and interacting with others, can be very soothing on the nerves, particularly if you expect no credits. Friends are powerful allies in your efforts to eliminate anxiety and they are such a valuable asset to accumulate for the journey ahead.

"But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, all losses are restored and sorrows end." - William Shakespeare

If you are serious about reducing your stress then read and learn about stress, just as you would study and become knowledgeable on any art, sport or trade that you wish to master। Just starting such a program will be very encouraging at the start, but don't just leave it at that - make it part of your personal knowledge base for living.

The Work-Family Life Balance

With all the advances and innovations made in production, technology and commerce, we in the world's most prosperous societies should all be living the easy life, satisfied and very happy.

Not so! Lifestyles today are commonly filled with overwork, anxieties and stress with daily routines that take up just too much of our days. There is an ongoing personal struggle to allocate hours between money related tasks, leisure, home and family. The hours are too often allocated in that order as we work harder for more money allocating the time left over for relationships and fun. These hours may be few or perhaps non existent.

While we have certainly come a long way and do seem to be accomplished with a standard of living that has reached astonishing heights, we may not have made great advances in the quality of our lives.

Corporate marketing has infected our desire for natural enjoyments. Society is being herded in a commercial and artificial direction. Many may tend to fit in with the life styles of others at work, in the neighborhood and in public; and they with us. And there are those popular TV personalities promoting this trend. The requirement placed upon us, if we have been conscripted to the consumption style of existence, is the need to acquire more money to keep up. Others may need to keep up with us and we may feel required to keep up with them, all to the joy of the corporate marketers.

The tendency for some types to insist on outdoing their fellow consumers dictates that they must make earning money their #1 life interest. And so make a dedication to long hours and hard work, obtaining new job heights and bigger pay checks.

We can easily be caught up in this living routine unless we are willing to make a stand. To be sure there are very many of us who would like to get off this senseless merry-go-round even if we are only partially taken up, but not if we are alone.

In trying for a better balance in our lives we can make a plan for having less wasteful and more enjoyable days. A good start is made making up and printing a list of amounts of time typically spent on various daily events. Then create and print a list of a new schedule with the following actions up for changes that will increase fun and decrease stress.

The work day; total hours, effort, transportation choices.
Interaction and discussions with co-workers, friends and family.
Relaxation with enjoyable hobbies, pet projects and just doing nothing.
Playing and exercising, especially outdoors and with others.
Sleep, lots of sleep - it knits up the raveled sleeve of care.

Review your plans and discuss them with others now and again, and make further positive adjustments.

In The Small Business Blog Stefan Töpfer writes

In the past twenty years the term “work-life balance” has come to symbolize the problem many face with increasing work pressures and the neglect of family, friends and their hobbies. This has created not only many health problems like cardiovascular disease, a weaker immune system, frequent headaches, backache to name but a few, but also social problems in areas like child-care, care for relatives, increase in divorces and other symptoms of a social fabric breakdown.

For women the situation is even worse, not only do they have all of the above mentioned problems, but by making the conscious decision to raise a family they also have to pay a penalty when the return to work. However well qualified, after only 3 to 5 years on parent leave, they find it very hard to get even close to the positions they held before. They are penalized for having a family and this causes additional stress and anxiety.

In the last ten years I have watched an encouraging trend, people opting out of the corporate treadmill, with much success. Many are starting small businesses or home businesses, freelancers, self-employed, contractors, professionals in all small business areas setting up shop.

. . . In this new established work-life environment, family - especially children, health, environment and personal fulfillment are beginning to transform the way we all think about work. I foresee long needed changes in the social fabric of our society and the reversal of detrimental trends which have started in some cases over 150 years ago.

Bullying Information Ideas and Resources

Bullying is a hateful act by disturbed individuals.

Being victimized by bullies can be so hurtful and harmful. But there is help. For you or for someone you know the following could be a first consideration.
  • There is nothing wrong with you just as you are.
  • There is something very wrong with their actions.
  • Others have survived this torture and so will you.
  • If you are a victim there is help to get you through.
  • You are deserving of a good life and you will have it.
It is not you - it is them.
Verbal or physical abuse by peers at work or school may be a real cause for fear yet it may indicate very well that the bullies have serious personal problems. They may feel a need to put others down in order to feel adequate. Perhaps they have serious family situations at home or they have other hurtful emotional issues that they express by being outwardly mean.

Can we feel sorry for them? Perhaps not, but we can consider the reasons why they have turned on you.

Maybe this is about something you have done, something embarrassing or much worse? Well no matter; so does mostly everyone else have shameful things buried in their closets, so free yourself from the worry, guilt and shame. If you have acted badly and can correct it and if you want to correct it, then do so. Otherwise pour it down the drain and forget it now and for all time.

If these bully sessions are about you as a person, your manners or appearance, then realize this: There is only one you in this world and you are unique - feel good about yourself just the way you are. You are a good person and that is what matters.

Talking it out can have wonderful positive results. If you can, discuss your feelings and concerns with a friend, your family, or someone with authority in your environment. A friend may very well have had bad experiences that they would like to unload, and you would both benefit. Anyway, a friend will be on your side and you may be very surprised with the help and suggestions someone else can gladly offer. It is almost always a comfort in confiding in others.

Benefiting from a friend is not a new idea and Marcus Cicero remarked over 2000 years ago; "Friendship improves happiness and abates misery by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief." And in more recent times Henry David Thoreau wrote; "A friend is one who takes me for what I am."

Those with the knowledge and ability to provide advice or help to victims are also there for you and there are numerous helpful resources available. So why not learn more about this sick act called bullying and how to deal with it. Help yourself, or perhaps someone else who is being bullied.

The MedlinePlus web site for patients and their families and friends offers some excellent help and resources on Dealing with Bullies. What Is Bullying? Prevention/Screening, Coping, Specific Conditions, Related Issues, Journal Articles, Organizations, Law and Policy, Statistics, Children, Teenagers.

Bullying is when a person or group repeatedly tries to harm someone who is weaker or who they think is weaker. Sometimes it involves direct attacks such as hitting, name calling, teasing or taunting. Sometimes it is indirect, such as spreading rumors or trying to make others reject someone.

Often people dismiss bullying among kids as a normal part of growing up. But bullying is harmful. It can lead children and teenagers to feel tense and afraid. It may lead them to avoid school. In severe cases, teens who are bullied may feel they need to take drastic measures or react violently. Others even consider suicide. For some, the effects of bullying last a lifetime.

And from FOCUS ADOLESCENT SERVICES a comprehensive internet site of information and resources on teen and family issues:

Bullying is abusive behavior by one or more students against a victim or victims. It can be a direct attack -- teasing, taunting, threatening, stalking, name-calling, hitting, making threats, coercion, and stealing -- or more subtle through malicious gossiping, spreading rumors, and intentional exclusion. Both result in victims becoming socially rejected and isolated.

Boys tend to use physical intimidation or threats, regardless of the gender of their victims. Bullying by girls is more often verbal, usually with another girl as the target. Cyber-bullying by both boys and girls -- in online chat rooms, e-mail, and text-messaging -- is increasing.

Bullying is a common experience for many children and teens. Direct bullying seems to increase through the elementary school years, peak in the middle school/junior high school years, and decline during the high school years. Although direct physical assault seems to decrease with age, verbal abuse appears to remain constant.

Whether the bullying is direct or indirect, the key component of bullying is physical or psychological intimidation that occurs repeatedly over time to create an ongoing pattern of harassment and abuse.
Kids Health from Nemours site has articles for parents, kids and teens.
If your child is being bullied, there are ways to help him or her cope with it on a day-to-day basis and lessen its lasting impact. And even if bullying isn't an issue right in your house right now, it's important to discuss it so your kids will be prepared if it does happen.

Managing Fear, Worry and Stress

Seems like unhappy and anxious times for many today as they angrily honk their horns, gulp down pills, and ram my shopping cart without comment. Some feel much worse, living with daily stress and feeling hopeless about their lives and the future.

There are usually alternatives to living this way of losing precious days to anxiety; precious because at midnight these days are gone forever. Accumulated miserable days can become miserable weeks and years, bringing us poor health and extended depression.

It's not necessarily that easy to quit worrying as it can be a strong addiction, but there are ways, some of which may be a practical solution to a particular situation or to worry in general.

The starting point is to recognize problems and decide to make sincere efforts to alleviate them, or eliminate them all together as a long term objective.

Gather information
There are hundreds of excellent books on this topic - start by reading a few and you will be pleasantly surprised. There is also much available on the internet which you can find by searching with words that reflect your distresses. When you come across an idea that is helpful write it out and keep coming back to review it even if not needed at the moment. If it's online, copy useful tips and routines that you feel will help you the most and paste them into a text or word file for future regular reminders.

Why not make up your own self-help booklet that you can keep referring too? I started just this as an endeavor 15 years ago and ended up with a compact set of pick-me-ups for different worrisome conditions. Working on this has been so uplifting in itself as it has kept my thoughts on the topic of self-help and improving my life. I still refer to it several times a week when I need a reminder that worrying is not helping, is not necessary, and is harmful.

I call my big little project 32 KEYS A collection of ideas about life.
It's just 32 basic self-help ideas and it is online.

A few sample ideas that I find most useful in replacing worry with happiness.
A change of attitude about a troubling situation can have an immediate positive effect and can become a permanent personal way of handling life's challenges in the future.
Many of us have our bad or sad stories and we may feel fully justified in being upset, troubled or sickly. Our view of the circumstances might prevent us from enjoying life in the present and could be preparing us for unhappy days or years ahead. Worry shreds the fabric of life, but only if we allow it.

Do not allow it.

Rethink positive thoughts that lie dormant in your mind or that are part of your life now but have been put aside. Make a list of your assets, especially non-material assets which you may have forgotten. Some but perhaps not all of: friends, family, health, home, job, nature, pets, garden, music, faith, books... and forget what you do not have, don't want, or that which is upsetting. Read some helpful notes, articles, quotations. Get busy having some fun at what you would normally do to enjoy yourself.

Social and financial bad news abound these days. The steady flow of negative information out of the media generally suggests that feeling dismal or fearful is totally appropriate. It is not. Break away from the bad news stories, turn off the TV, read a good book, go for a walk...

Rehashing bad experiences, mistakes, regrets - what a painful waste of time this can be. The past has happened, we can't do anything about that. Troublesome thoughts of things gone by should not occupy our minds, stirring up painful feelings again and again. A review of a problem once or twice to determine how it occurred will be useful in determining future experiences, actions and reactions. Then that burden should be unloaded - and buried.

Worrying about a future outcome can be turned off too. If a new plan of action for a specific upcoming situation is required, prepare it.

Gather all the related facts putting the details on paper or on your PC.
Consider involving others. This will release anxieties and provide new ideas.
List all possible solutions to the problem favorable or not.
List the advantages of each. List the disadvantages of each.
Select a solution and describe in detail the steps to carry it through.
Follow through without looking back.

You can review the course of action occasionally and consider the results at those moments but when you have done your best it's time to move on and think other thoughts that will add positive value to your days.

So, in the words of Shantideva, "If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?"

It's only a worry if you worry about it.

Relax: Reduce Stress and Anxiety

Ways to calm and eliminate tensions
when you and all about are so busy
- overdoing too much of everything.

Are you waiting for that Puerto Vallarta vacation that lies ahead? If so you could be losing many enjoyable and relaxed days waiting until you are there sitting by the pool. I hate to dampen your expectations but the holiday will only last two weeks and then it's back to the grind for 50 weeks.

In this somewhat hectic social environment so many of our lives are filled with anxieties and tensions. There are unfinished tasks from over-programmed days both at work and after hours. Today's and tomorrow's to-do lists are long with routine problems and concerns.

In earlier years most days were physically intensive both for dad at work and mom at home. Much less time was spent on planning, calculating and worrying about how to fit it all together. At bedtime the mind was usually clear and the body soft and tired and ready for a sound sleep.

Depending on your environment it may not be all that easy to have a calm day, and a restless night too often lies ahead. But this can be made better with changes to daily routines and an adjusted perspective.

Not to be taken as professional help which can be so important with serious problems, the following suggestions could help put you on an easier cruise through the days ahead. A day lived poorly is a day lost forever so why not consider some adjustments?

Reduce the amount of time you spend not relaxing.
Examine your schedule for the day and see which things can be cut back or eliminated altogether. Social activities are fine if they are enjoyable but are there some more relaxing and enjoyable than others? Gatherings with family and friends are the best.

Consider reducing your work week by living a simpler lifestyle. This could lead to a much more satisfying and tranquil existence. If this kind of adjustment to work is not practical then why not just reduce your spending as an easier way of living. Debt is a heavy burden.

In a consumer society we all want more and better things for ourselves and our family. It has turned into somewhat of a competition but you have not signed on for life. Get off the merry-go-round and get your feet on good old mother earth. To be always desiring more than what you have does not bring peace of mind.

We all want better things for ourselves and our families, but we have to balance our desires with the cost. How much does the promotion, vacation, new purchase, cost in terms of life? How many extra hours of stress and anxiety, now and later, go into getting it? With the fast paced living that surrounds us it's difficult to avoid rushing through our daily lives to do and acquire more, raising the possibility of turning friends into competitors.

Use those free hours wisely with less TV and more fresh air and soft music. Generally television consists of noisy commercials, depressing news stories and violent dramas. However, viewing a dull monotonous movie (not too difficult to find), with your thumb on MUTE, can take your mind off worries that command your thoughts.

A relaxed body should translate to a relaxed mind.
In all your activities slow down and move calmly in an easy manner. Practice deeper slower breathing as you move through the day, stopping to do so if necessary.

At your desk take a few minutes and let all your muscles hang limp and soft. Don't try, just let it all go. Consciously let the muscles relax every time you feel them tighten, which might be all day long to start with. It is unlikely that you will feel any stress if your muscles are relaxed.

A simple meditative routine to calm and refresh.
Find a quiet place for yourself.
Sit in an easy comfortable position.
Rest your eyes downward, softly closed.
Breathe slowly and naturally for 10-15 minutes.
Only think about what you are doing, nothing else.

A creative break.
Picture a detailed peaceful retreat in your imagination and go there to calm your feelings. A tranquil lake or colorful passive garden with easy music floating in. Be there, rest a while and rejuvenate. Make up a calming list of words like serene, tranquil, peaceful, sunsets, tranquil and repeat them through your day.

One of the biggest handicaps to relaxing is worry.

We will not relax during the day (or night) if our minds are filled with worrisome thoughts.

A change in thinking in how we view and react to situations can be most helpful. Worrying over things that 'might' happen can waste large portions of our lives, considering that so often it is for nothing, and almost certainly has no benefit. Worrying about things that have happened will not turn back the hands of time to undo it. If there is still some action you can take in the present, and if you want to, then do it. If not forget it.

It's only a worry if you worry about it.

Count your blessings.
We sometimes go for long periods of time forgetting the things we have to be thankful for. Recalling those assets can have a very calming and comfortable effect. What about your friends, family, life and health. Perhaps your surroundings, job, nature, music. They may not all make your list, perhaps you are missing a few but list and think about those you do have.

Relax, smile. Take awhile.

Worry, Anxiety and Fear Tips

Suggestions for today's life and social, stresses and worries.
From a old non-pro senior who's been there and done OK.

Anxious and disturbing events are happening all about and we are reminded of them daily. How can we help not being affected by distressing news on war, crime, poverty, corruption and perhaps our personal situations.

We often find ourselves in very worrisome circumstances feeling helpless or hopeless. Unable to get our minds off a problem we flounder around in thoughts of despair.

The harm that worry causes in our lives has been well documented by health professionals, academics and some very wise old sages. Worry can weaken and sicken us, and turn our days into nightmares if left unchecked. At the very least, it can prevent us from living fully and happily the only life that we will ever have. At its worse, it can devastate us.

What to do?
Not to lighten on any oppressive situation but usually we can do something to help ourselves in some way and perhaps eliminate the burden altogether. Of course we should always consider professional medical help with serious physical or mental problems. Many noted thinkers have suggested ideas that apply to a very large percentage of distressing conditions and have provided helpful ideas for living a more peaceful and happy life.

Worried that a dire situation 'might' occur can waste large portions of one's life, considering that so often it is for nothing. Worrying almost certainly does no good if nothing can be done, and it cannot or should not be avoided. To continue worrying about it will only increase the stress and result in yet more worry.

A lot of our anxieties and fears have no sound basis and we can turn them off, if we first think them through. A friend can be a big help here by providing another viewpoint, a useful suggestion or simply directing your thoughts back on a sound course.

With a quick and positive change of thoughts we can feel better, even when there appears to be no way up. So switch off the negatives and simply start thinking nice pictures, ideas and experiences. Stop and make a list to remind yourself of what you have and the things that make you feel good: Family, friends, nature, music, gardening, pets . . .

Philosophers of old have looked at anxieties this way: Consider that the situation is not causing the terrible feelings, but it is what we think of the situation. This can have an enormous positive effect on how we are feeling. So if a specific problem is on your mind analyze it. Gather together all the facts. List the possible solutions with pros and cons. Detail the steps to be taken. Follow through now or when the time comes.

If you are worried about something that you have already done consider if there is still something you can do, and want to do to make amends. If there isn't close and lock the doors on it.

For a problem that you still view as having no practical solution, know that others have been there and been worse. They have survived and are well and so will you be.

Here are some words from those very wise guys, carried on down through the centuries just because they are very wise words. A slow read through them should be a breath of fresh air when the mind is smogged in worry.
  • There are more things, Lucilius, that frighten us than injure us, and we suffer more in imagination than in reality. - Seneca
  • Drag your thoughts away from your troubles... by the ears, by the heels, or any other way you can manage it. - Mark Twain
  • Today is the tomorrow we worried about yesterday. - Author Unknown
  • The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one. - Elbert Hubbard
  • My life has been full of terrible misfortunes most of which never happened. - Michel de Montaigne
  • If you want to test your memory, try to recall what you were worrying about one year ago today. - E. Joseph Cossman
  • A hundredload of worry will not pay an ounce of debt. - George Herbert
  • That the birds of worry and care fly over you head, this you cannot change, but that they build nests in your hair, this you can prevent. - Chinese Proverb

Children, Life and Happiness

How can you help a child towards a life of peace and contentment?

There are so many daily influences in our lives directing us towards unhealthy and unhappy lifestyles. We are constantly faced with pressures and persuasions to consume bad food and to live stressful lives with diminishing values.

Sickness, worry, anger, fear or depression can take over and dominate our existence, often because we have taken the wrong paths.

If you think you have anxiety, worries and troubles what are your kids going to have?

There are various ways to help a child to live a happier life such as getting kids involved in physical or mental, mind occupying interests. Home hobbies and activities like crafts or gardening, learning and partaking of nature with hiking, camping, or visiting city parks. Friendly and healthy sports.

These all help immensely and there is a lot of good information before us, on healthy eating and exercising habits for example.

Mental well being and happiness information is not so prominent yet is one of the best all-round general advantages in providing for a content and fulfilling life. Learning and practicing self-help and self-improvement could be the best time investment made for self or family.

A good place to start is the self-improvement or self-help section of the public library or bookstore. If you think that this is an odd place to be, think again. There are very many big selling self-help titles to choose from. These books are popular reading. These inspirational ideas are easy enough to understand, but more difficult to practice. But it just takes practice. Start with the most popular books on various self-help topics. Reread the better ones, highlight the best phrases, and take notes. Try to devote a few minutes a day to help make good thinking and happy, satisfied feelings a way of life.

Just a few examples of the ideas and little positive gems
that can be collected for pleasant travels into a positive future.

Poor self esteem?
"The finest lives, in my opinion, are those who rank in the common model, and with the human race, but without miracle, without extravagance." - Michel de Montaigne

Worry is only a worry if you worry about it.
"If you can solve your problem, then what is the need of worrying? If you cannot solve it, then what is the use of worrying?" - Shantideva

Had some bad luck?
"Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out." - Art Linkletter

Trying too hard? Just where were you going?
"Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you." - Nathaniel Hawthorne

So what do you really need?
"Whether in favor or in humiliation, be not dismayed. Let your eyes leisurely look at the flowers blooming and falling in your courtyard. Whether you leave or retain your position, take no care. Let your mind wander with the clouds folding and unfolding beyond the horizon." - Hung Tzu-ch'eng

How much living are you willing to pay for that?
"The cost of a thing is the amount of what I call life, which is required to be exchanged for it immediately or in the long run." - Henry Thoreau

Got a tough problem that needs solving?
Get all the facts. Describe the problem in detail. List all the possible solutions. List the advantages and disadvantages of each. Detail what you will do. Follow through.

Relationship problems - a viewpoint.
Joseph Addison puts it quite nicely this way: "Two persons who have chosen each other out of all the species with a design to be each other's mutual comfort and entertainment have, in that action, bound themselves to be good-humored, affable, discreet, forgiving, patient, and joyful, with respect to each other's frailties and perfections, to the end of their lives."

Take a break and appreciate.
"Who will tell whether one happy moment of love or the joy of breathing or walking on a bright morning and smelling the fresh air, is not worth all the suffering and effort which life implies." - Erich Fromm

Change your thoughts - change your feelings.
"Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission." - Arnold Bennett

These are some of the helpful reminders that are in my treasure chest of life tips. You should at least check out to see what's out there and what could be valuable and suitable to you and yours. There is so much practical life enhancing self-help information in print.

Noise Pollution and Health

When does sound become noise?

Not necessarily when it directs your thoughts in another direction. Enjoyable music is likely to create pleasant thoughts and carefree feelings and is pleasant sound. When sound is constant, loud or annoying it can disturb and cause tension and anxiety. It is noise.

There is also noise that you do not hear consciously. Spending two days in a motel squeezed between a highway and the beach, we did not notice the traffic sound anymore after an hour or so had passed. But when we later watched a video of the wedding on the beach, the steady background noise was astounding. It wasn't background anymore.

Noise has been on a considerable rise for most of the past century thanks to manufacturing and the transporting of goods and people.

Some noise is purposely created to attract and alter our thoughts for the purpose of selling to us. TV commercials for example. Many of us realize this and do not like it very much at all. Others are unconcerned and let it seep in to find a position within their minds.

But most of us can't just pack up and move to a small country town or lakeside cottage for peace and tranquility. We have work to do, families to raise, and a consumer regimen to follow that is programmed into us from childhood.

Possibly there are things we can do to alleviate the noise intake like relocating home or job, altering traffic routes, muting commercials or shutting off the TV altogether. One thing we can do is to become more aware of noise and its effects on our well being, and then taking the steps towards achieving a prefered calmer lifestyle.

Definitions and causes
Noise pollution (or environmental noise) is displeasing human-, animal- or machine-created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. A common form of noise pollution is from transportation, principally motor vehicles. The word noise comes from the Latin word nausea meaning seasickness.

The source of most noise worldwide is transportation systems, motor vehicle noise, but also including aircraft noise and rail noise. Poor urban planning may give rise to noise pollution, since side-by-side industrial and residential buildings can result in noise pollution in the residential area.

Other sources are car alarms, emergency service sirens, office equipment, factory machinery, construction work, groundskeeping equipment, barking dogs, appliances, power tools, lighting hum, audio entertainment systems, loudspeakers and noisy people.
Read more on noise pollution at Wikipedia.

The World Health Organization on the effects of noise:
Noise seriously harms human health and interferes with people’s daily activities at school, at work, at home and during leisure time. Traffic noise alone is harming today the health of almost every third European. The main health risks of noise identified by WHO are:
  • pain and hearing fatigue;
  • hearing impairment including tinnitus;
  • annoyance;
  • interferences with social behaviour (aggressiveness, protest and helplessness);
  • interference with speech communication;
  • sleep disturbance and all its consequences on a long and short term basis;
  • cardiovascular effects;
  • hormonal responses (stress hormones) and their possible consequences on human metabolism (nutrition) and immune system;
  • performance at work and school.
The programme on noise and health at ECEH Bonn reviews the evidence on main health effects of noise and identifies the needs of specific vulnerable groups. Working in close co-operation with other WHO programmes ECEH Bonn develops indicators and guidelines for noise and health, analyses exposure-response relationships for different health effects and studies the long-term effects of night exposure to noise such as long-term sleep disturbance and cardiovascular problems.

Escape if you will: "There is however, a true music of nature - the song of the birds, the whisper of leaves, the ripple of waters upon a sandy shore, the wail of wind or sea." - John Lubbock (1834-1913).

And if you can't get there then dream of it, listen to soft music, or just relax in a quiet spot.

Social Stress and Depression

In today's fast paced consumer world many of us get weighed down with tensions, stresses and worries. And worse.

Parenting pressures can mount and be overwhelming with the challenging issues of work, home and raising kids. Our kids are often under extreme pressures with growing up, learning, competing and striving for acceptance with peers, and dealing with adults.

Depression may set in for a combination of reasons for any family member, and it can be upsetting to devastating.

If guilt is involved get rid of it. We can consider our errors or wrong doings long enough to realize the error of our ways. If there is something we can do about it and want to, we can do it. Otherwise we can assure ourselves that we will avoid that mistake in the future. Beyond this, rebashing ourselves endlessly will do no good, is a complete waste of time and unhealthy.

To improve upon a frenzied troublesome way of life we can reassess our values and routines. If possible, we can eliminate some of those things which are not necessary to a contented life, and we can slow down. Achieving a stress free way of life will help keep us happier and living longer.

Have a friend. Friendship can be a soothing balm for depression sufferers as the relationship takes up some mental capacity that would otherwise be used on anxieties and self-doubt. "The rule of friendship means there should be mutual sympathy between them, each supplying what the other lacks and trying to benefit the other, always using friendly and sincere words." - Buddha.

Severe depression can be very difficult to deal with and extremely harmful healthwise. Medical attention should always be a first consideration for serious depression.

Facts About Depression from the FCIC
At some time or another, everybody feels sad or blue. But if you are sad most of the time, and it's causing problems in your relationships or with normal daily activities, the problem may be depression. Some people think that depression is just a state of mind that people can "snap out of" if they only try. Unfortunately, this is not true. Depression is a real illness and can affect people of any age, race, ethnic or economic group. In any given year, over 18 million American adults will suffer from a depressive illness (which affects nearly twice as many women as men) and it is the leading cause of disability in the United States.

Symptoms of Depression
Depressive disorders come in different forms, the most common being major depression, dysthymia and bipolar disorder. Within these types there are variations in the number of symptoms, their severity, and persistence.

No one knows what causes depression. It is an illness. It may have something to do with:
  • The way different parts of the brain “talk” to each other
  • Depression runs in the family
  • Being very sick or being sick all the time
  • Stress
  • Using drugs or alcohol
  • Having a baby
Some of the symptoms of depression include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Sadness
  • Things that used to make you happy, don’t make you happy anymore
  • No interest in eating
  • Eating too much, or all the time
  • Sleeping too little, or all the time
  • Feeling tired all the time
  • Feeling nervous or cranky
  • Crying a lot
  • Feeling guilty
  • Feeling hopeless
  • Trouble paying attention
  • Thinking of death or trying to kill yourself

Sleepless Society

Sleep tips and resources in times of stress and worry.

In a healthy environment where there is good food, work and income, exercise and rest, nature and very few worries, a sound sleep should arrive easily every night. Many of those conditions aren't available to those participating in today's fast paced, never-have-enough social environment.

Sleep should be there for us to rest and re-energize for the following day, but it's not so easy for many. I have had my share of sleep problems, mostly when younger. In my experiences thoughts are the cause of toss and turn nights. Kicking around some upsetting or puzzling situation, past, present or ahead can be a whirring circle that does not want to stop.

These are the solutions to achieving adequate sleep that have worked well for me.

Trying to sleep has the opposite effect. I quit trying to go to sleep! Trying does not work!

Acceptance plays a big role in life once again. Accepting that a restless night is not be a big problem takes a great big load off my mind and quite often it's possible to carry on normally the next day with just that little bit of sleep. And even better, realizing that this is note a dire situation will so often result in a restful sleep just a bit later.

Counting very slow deep breaths is good because it is healthy and relaxing. Often it is difficult to get past 4 or 5 because that 'thing' keeps returning and then the turmoil is restarted.

Problems or worries need to be shut down completely at bedtime. I can think about that stressful experience - or I can sleep. It's a choice, sort of. It is a known fact that I cannot think of two things at the same time so a change of thoughts in order with recurring turbulences.

But changing thoughts to something pleasant and peaceful, real or imaginary, or dull and stationary can really work. A peaceful walk by a calm lake with still waters, or a speck on the wall can do it.

Yet holding on to calming thoughts may not always be easy and the worries can keep intruding if they are strong.

It might be necessary to concentrate on a topic that is not serene but not worrisome either, along with a change in physical position to make this work. It almost always helps me to shut down the agitating windmill completely when I get out of bed and do an easy crossword, watch some dull quiet TV, with or without a light snack. Even 1-2 hours lost from bed at 2am seems unacceptable at first, but if a solid sleep returns for the remaining few hours it's worth the effort to climb out of a warm bed. Often an hour's sleep just before rising can be very deep and satisfying.

Quietly relaxing in the latter part of the evening is most helpful in preparing for a restful sleep. Daily exercise, physical or mental, is part of a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately it can be very stimulating if done approaching bedtime and might create a wide awake state that will not unwind easily. Watching violent TV movies or upsetting news is not the right preparation either.

A soothing alcoholic nightcap relaxes but normally results in waking up a few hours later, and an alcohol induced sleep is not a relaxed sleep.

Note: This is not meant to be advice to others. It works well for me but underlying causes could be very serious and complicated. Professional help should always be a consideration as with all medical problems.

Society and Family Stressed

There has been a social trend in the richer parts of the world towards acquiring material assets over happiness. By way of media we are encouraged towards self-interest over interest in others and the spirit of the community, at least in the friendliest ways. As we increasingly devote our life efforts to acquiring more goods and services we are often in competition with friends, fellow workers and neighbors, wishing and striving for something new or better. We may want to be cool in the eyes of all that will regard us, and they might have similar aspirations.

If we struggle to earn more to acquire more we may be depriving ourselves of sufficient casual fun time with friends and most importantly, family. Along with this desire for more and better things comes more stress into our lives and into the lives of those around us. The family may become more fractured as we work long hours and the kids watch more TV programs and play video games. In this environment they will become even more commercialized than their parents, as marketing whets their appetites for more stuff.

Are we too busy doing the wrong things for the wrong reasons?

There are tremendous influences to continue along this path as it generates more corporate and personal profits which society has become so accustomed to 'need'. So we strive and stress on for new false achievements losing out on some true basic and pleasant experiences in life.

If we are in this endless routine we should consider what Marcus Aurelius had to say 1800 years ago, "Think of what you have rather than of what you lack. Of the things you have, select the best and then reflect how eagerly you would have sought them if you did not have them."

In other words it's a merry-go-round that we do not need to be on and should consider jumping from.

Geela Author at "The American Dream" asks
"From environmental pollution to spiritual pollution, from artificial food to artificial joy - these are the side effects of the pursuit of materialism (a by-product of the American Dream, as we know it). Today, everything is fair game in the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain and personal responsibility, not to mention the absence of morality and a wholesome values system.?"

Tackling this problem as a whole society seems rather hopeless at this point in time as it is so entrenched, but there are ways. One suggestion is directing the young towards achieving happiness in lieu of buying more.

In Battling the roots of materialism by focusing on happiness Penny Nickel cites a study which "appears to suggest that even though many young people think having consumer goods is what makes them happy, if they start to feel better about themselves their focus will shift to non-materialistic priorities like friends and family. In other words, if a teen you know is begging for pricey items, you may be better off spending more quality time with them-- boosting their self-esteem, and thus increasing their relative appreciation of your company compared to the material goods-- rather than spending that extra time earning the money to buy them what they want."

The happiest moments of my life have been the few which I have passed at home in the bosom of my family. ~ Thomas Jefferson
